ILIAS doesn't refer to Homer's epic but stands for the second learning management system at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences. The individual letters are an acronym of Integrated Learning, Information and Cooperation (German: Arbeitskooperations) System or in short: ILIAS.
At RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, the first department to use the web authoring tool ILIAS was the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering in 2006. The first specific project on the platform was the learning module Voice-over-IP (VoIP), which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. After its successful instructional use via ILIAS, the platform was linked to the department's and later to the Geisenheim Faculty's Stud.IP. With the renaming of the university in 2008, ILIAS too was developed into a campuswide system. Since winter semester 2010/11 ILIAS can once again be accessed via Stud.IP.
ILIAS's application options are not limited to providing learning modules and include online instruction, online testing and online submission of student work.
ILIAS is linked to Stud.IP. More specifically, this means that Stud.IP can be used to integrate learning modules created in ILIAS into individual courses. It is also possible to create a course in ILIAS via Stud.IP and to have students create own work in ILIAS.
Using both systems in conjunction creates a major surplus for instruction.
