Admission to the program is regulated by the Hesse Enrollment Act (Hessische Immatrikulationsverordnung –HimmaVO) of December 29, 2003. The number of places is limited; the program admits 36 students per year.
To be considered for admission to the master's program in environmental management and urban planning in metropolitan areas, applicants need to have obtained a first degree (usually a bachelor's or diploma degree) with an overall average grade of 2.3 or better and an application letter detailing the applicant's particular suitability for the program. For applicants with grades below 2.3 but better than 3.0, proof and evaluation of the described particular suitability are decisive criteria for admission.
The master's program in environmental management & urban planning in metropolitan areas is administered by the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering in cooperation with the Geisenheim Faculty of RheinMain University and the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geomatics of Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. The program's operation is based on two cooperation agreements, and all partners are represented in the program's committee of academic affairs and examination board.
Admission decisions are taken by the admissions committee instituted by all cooperating faculties and are based on the submitted application documents. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places, the application documents are supplemented by a personal interview.
§ 3 of the program regulations stipulate that applicants need to hold a first degree in civil engineering, landscape architecture, architecture, geoinformatics, municipal engineering, city planning, geography (with a focus in urban geography) or a comparable program to be eligible for admission to the master's program in environmental management and urban planning in metropolitan areas (M.Eng.).
Independent of the first degree's field, the required minimum length of the program is three years. If a first degree of a different type than the ones mentioned above are considered to be comparable will be decided by the faculty's dean in consultation with the admissions committee.
No prior internships or practical experience are required.
International applicants need to prove that their German skills are adequate for studying at a German university. Certification of German skills is administered by the International Office of RheinMain University of Applied Sciences. This can currently be done by successfully completing any of the following language assessment tests:
The applicants' aptitude is assessed on the basis of their particular suitability for the program as demonstrated by the grade and subject of their first degree or other relevant documented qualifications in connection with an application letter and a possibly required admissions interview.
