Contents & Mode of Instruction

Because of its technical orientation with programs in architecture, city planning, construction engineering and construction management, the faculty's expertise is grounded in engineering.

Given architecture's multi-faceted professional fields and the permanent changes the discipline is experiencing, the training of degree programs in architecture can not be structured along a few select specialized areas. The program's instruction thus also includes the teaching of communication and professional skills.

In addition, traditional teaching in lectures and seminars is complemented by project-based work forms that allow students to get to know the interplay of different disciplines while jointly working on a complex task. Design assignments, materialization, construction engineering and structural design are integrated in an interdisciplinary fashion.

Program Structure

The bachelor's degree program in architecture lays the foundations for working as a generalist with training in the fundamentals of architecture. The program's profile is characterized by an interdisciplinary foundational engineering training that forms the basis for future specializations and well-grounded, more in-depth studies in the area of existing architectural structures.

The program foregrounds multifaceted offerings of instructional content that encourage students' independent learning and self-monitoring during their studies. Imparting foundational knowledge is closely interconnected with the practical application of what has been learned accompanied by more in-depth study of the subject. The program aims at developing students' ability to think and act independently in professional contexts. In addition, the program trains students' creative and artistic abilities and provides historical contexts for their creative work. Moreover, the curriculum promotes developing insights into social contexts as well as communication skills.

The education offered by the bachelor's program in architecture comprises the fundamentals for the professional skills requisite for working as an architect.

Subject Areas

The program content is structured in three areas:

  • Design (project modules)
  • Architectural design, urban planning, building theory
  • Building technology and construction
  • Architectural history and design theory
  • Artistic foundations, architectural representation and presentation
  • Construction management

The program includes a large number of electives, ensuring a high level of choice for students, who can choose electives from the broad and diverse offerings of the architecture and civil engineering departments as well as from the university's Center for Communication and Professional Skills workshop program.

In the course of their studies, bachelor's students need to complete electives of at least 8 credit hours overall. Approved electives can also be chosen from the interior design or design departments from the design – computer science – media faculty of RheinMain University of Applied Sciences.
