Creative Thinking, Artistic Research, Conceptual Design

The master's degree program in interior design leads students to a second academic degree. It allows students to expand their knowledge of the core areas of interior design and presents them in complex contexts. Graduates have learned to carry out work with high interdisciplinary, analytical, methodical and conceptual components as well as to contextualize societal, social, functional, constructive, technical, organizational, design and formal issues with each other. Both the program's instructional methods as well as its contents provide the foundation for creative thinking and enable qualify students for work on innovative, independent projects.

Development, Production & Marketing of Three-Dimensional Environments

As an advanced artistic-academic degree, the master of arts in interior design conforms both with the EU directive on the mutual recognition of diplomas, certificates and other formal qualifications in architecture (85/384/EWG) as well as the requirements of the Federal Chamber of German Architects.

In its Guidelines for Professional Qualifications of Interior Designers of July 21, 2006, the latter organization regulates the requirements for registration in the registry of architects. A master's degree ensures the ability to be registered with the chamber of architects, which is the legal requirement for carrying out self-employed and entrepreneurial work under the protected designation "interior designer" (Innenarchitekt/in). The degree qualifies its holders for the independent development, production and marketing of products and services in the relevant professional fields.

Job Opportunities: From Leadership Positions to Self-Employment in Interior Design

Among other things, graduates of the master's program are frequently hired as project leaders, department heads or office managers, assuming leadership positions after some introductory training, or they work on a self-employed basis as entrepreneurs by founding their own offices or agencies. Large, prestigious architectural firms with secure public or industrial client bases also hire excellent interior designers as design and atmosphere experts for their specialized departments.

The master's degree thus provides graduates with a broad range of professional options. Some of them are: work as self-employed interior designer through registration with the chamber of architects (after professional experience and bearing the professional designation of "interior architect" for a minimum of two years), project leadership in interior design, planning or design offices, leading positions in planning departments in enterprises, leadership positions in the construction industry (lighting, furniture, trade fairs, exhibitions ...), a career in the higher grade of the civil service, both at the federal and at the state level.
