A Dozen Reasons for Choosing the Master's Program in Computer Science at RheinMain

1. Personal Growth

Whether it directly follows studying in a bachelor's or diploma program or comes after a stint in the professional world: within an easily manageable period of two years the master's program offers an excellent opportunity for personal development, the acquisition of new skills and new professional goals. Remaining at the cutting edge of exciting developments in computer science, further solidifying skills with in-depth academic work and improving communication and professional skills all number among the essential motivations of our students. Because of the small size of our learning groups, students find it easy to get to know interesting colleagues and are able to extend their personal networks, and as alumni they can still stay in touch with their university in Wiesbaden even after graduation.

2. Distinct Profile

. . . with two concentrations, networked systems and interactive applications. With its concentrations, the master's program allows for in-depth study in a particular area, which is supported by appropriate lab facilities and equipment as well as specific research and industrial development projects in these areas. The concentrations are not represented by just one professor; rather, in each area students can draw on the cumulative expertise of a number of specialized professors. Networked systems and interactive applications are both highly promising and dynamic areas of computer science.

3. Intelligent Program Structure

Examinations are offered each semester and are rarely conducted as sit-down examinations. One of the program's essential element is the master's project allowing students to participate in collaborative project work in a research-oriented environment.

4. Customized Studies

Apart from a small number of compulsory modules, students can customize their course of studies so that it fits their own interests and aspirations. The program's focus on two concentrations allows for a variety of options and specializations within these concentrations.

5. Professors from the Professional Practice

The professors at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences have not spend their entire careers in an academic environment. To be hired, they need to have had multiple years of professional experience in the industry, most often in leading positions. Because of their background, professors do not only have insider knowledge of professional realities in the industry, but also maintain a variety of professional contacts. This allows providing a program that achieves an especially high level of practice-orientation for its students. Of course, all professors have also had long-term appointments at universities or research institutions and earned a doctorate so that they are also excellently trained in academic and research methodologies.

6. Up-to-Date Instructional Methods

Universities of applied sciences have always considered teaching to be an essential focus of their work. Innovative teaching and learning methods, seminar-style classes, e-learning, work in small groups, intensive advising and practice-oriented education – RheinMain University of Applied Sciences can look back at decades of experience in these areas. Given this institutional tradition as well as the professors' participation in continuing education programs on university-level teaching, professors are not just research, but also teaching professionals that excel in helping students learn complex contents.

7. Interdisciplinary Environment

The master's program in computer science is part of the Faculty of Design – Computer Science – Media (DCSM). With its different fields, the faculty covers the entire range of computer science areas and offers the two bachelor's degree programs applied computer science and media computer science besides the master's program. As a special feature, however, at the DCSM faculty studying computer science is embedded in an interdisciplinary context. The faculty with its over 40 professors also includes the areas design and media, both of which feature important relations to the master's program's concentrations. In addition, the DCSM faculty also has the necessary competences in business administration and mathematics at its disposal, tailored to the needs of computer science students.

8. Diverse International Contacts

Apart from numerous contacts to EU countries, there is also intensive cooperation with the USA, New Zealand, South-Korea, Brazil and Russia.

9. Quality Labs & Equipment

Besides up-to-date Mac, Windows and Linux workstations, the DCSM faculty also boasts a number of specially equipped laboratories for the concentrations networked systems and interactive applications, where the master's program classes meet. For instance, there are, among others, a laboratory for distributed systems (server systems, parallel computers and platforms for distributed embedded systems), labs for computer vision and digital image processing (equipped with for instance the appropriate image processing and camera systems), a lab for web-based applications as well as a lab for visualization (with up-to-date display systems and interactive devices).

10. Research Projects, Technology Transfer & a Doctoral Program

Through decades of providing a practice-oriented academic education, through internships and student theses that are completed in enterprises, RheinMain University of Applied Sciences is part of an excellent network of businesses and organizations from the region and beyond. From these contacts result a number of RheinMain University's research and development cooperations and projects. Particularly for master's students, this makes for an exciting environment. Moreover, this constellation also allows for accomplishing one of the goals of practice-oriented degree programs: To not only engage in research teaching in order to advance academic knowledge, but also to master the transfer of technology. Technology transfer stands for providing academic knowledge for their actual use in the professional practice and makes up an important part of our graduates' qualifications. And what is more, the chance of landing a paid job in one of the research and industrial development projects during studying constitutes an interesting opportunity for students to combine paying for their studies with their academic education in an efficient way.

Furthermore, since 2009 a doctoral program is jointly being offered with the Goethe University Frankfurt. Master's students will automatically have some exposure to the doctoral program. Getting a doctorate as further qualification upon graduation from the master's program is in any case a possibility.

11. Rhine-Main Area Advantage

Next to the cities Frankfurt am Main and Offenbach, the adjacent capitals of Germany's Länder (federal states) of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate Wiesbaden and Mainz form the second main center of the Rhine-Main area, an economically dynamic area that is the home of many businesses and organizations. At the same time, the Rheingau landscape and the Taunus and Odenwald uplands complement the cultural offerings of a metropolitan area with sports and outdoor recreation offerings.

12. Seal of Quality

The computer science master's program of RheinMain University of Applied Sciences has been accredited by the independent ASIIN e.V. organization, a quality assurance agency in higher education with a focus on engineering, computer science, natural sciences and mathematics. The accreditation constitutes a certification that not only authenticates the program's high quality, but also allows the students to obtain a broad-based recognition of their accomplishments – both within Europe and worldwide. ASIIN is one of the most prestigious accreditation organizations in the computer science field and is moreover also affiliated with the international Washington Accord. Graduates of the master's program have access to the higher grade of the civil service and can enter doctoral programs.
