Working on the side, combining a master's program with part-time jobs or caring for a family – these are just a few reasons why some of the students we've been having so far were not interested in studying full-time. Even though the master's program in computer science is a regular full-time program to begin with, it does not have to be studied full-time.
As the individual modules are independent from each other, they can be studied in any order. Moreover, given the program's structure it is conceivable to adapt the workload from semester to semester, for example because of changing professional demands at the workplace. For instance, it would be possible to aim at accumulating 20 ECTS credit points in the first semester, but only 10 in the second.
The master's program's scheduling also takes part-time students into consideration. When possible, on-campus class times are scheduled so that some days without any classes result which can then be used for working on a job.
Currently, formal registration as part-time student is not possible for any of the master's degree programs in Hesse. As no tuition is being charged at the moment, this does not lead to any disadvantages for part-time students, however.
