Wireless local networks are becoming ever more important. This includes all of us as users of smart phones, laptops and modern consumer electronics as well as for industrial users, who increasingly rely on wireless field buses and sensor/actuator networks. The range of technologies used is vast: from NFC, RFID and Bluetooth, IEEE 802.15.4-based technologies such as ZigBee and 6LoWPAN to the by now nearly ubiquitous WLAN (IEEE 802.11). The wireless LAN lab's purpose is to make accessible new technical developments in this area so that they can be tested, evaluated and used as a basis for developing new protocols and applications. To this effect, the wireless LAN lab features
For teaching purposes, the wireless LAN lab is mostly used for the master's program in computer science. In particular, courses of the networked systems concentration such as
use the lab's infrastructure for their hands-on training.
The research at the wireless LAN laboratory is integrated into the SENSYBLE doctoral program. Research work currently focuses on protocols and procedures for improving security, data protection and anonymity in ad-hoc and sensor networks. Moreover, numerous papers on evaluating current WLAN standards, on the simulation of radio frequency site surveys, on using WLAN for real-time applications, on efficient routing in sensor networks and on a number of security procedures have emerged in the wireless LAN laboratory.
