Since summer semester 2006, the faculty offers a master's program in computer science, which has been re-accredited in winter semester 2010/11 with expanded course offerings and yet more flexible study options. Students can choose from the two concentrations networked systems and interactive applications, which can be shown on the degree certificate. The program builds on the bachelor's degree programs applied computer science or media computer science of RheinMain University of Applied Sciences or equivalent programs from other universities.

Enrollment

New students are accepted each semester. The program does not have limited admission. Places are allocated by RheinMain University.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirement is an overall grade of 2.0 or better in one of the above mentioned or an equivalent bachelor's program. A case by case consideration applies to applicants with an overall average grade up to 2.5. In this context, candidates may have to take a special aptitude test.

Structure

The master's program in computer science is a four-semester program. Closely supervised tutorials and projects in small groups are an essential component of all course offerings. Students have access to up-to-date Mac, Windows and Linux workstations as well as to special equipment for the concentrations networked systems and interactive applications.

As early as in the first two semesters, students can pursue their own interests by individually assembling two thirds of their course load from an elective course catalog. In the context of a self-chosen master's topic, the third semester focuses on research-oriented project study. In the fourth semester, the research phase is followed by composing the master's thesis.

Career Options

Graduates of the master's program in computer science are suited to work in all computer-science-related work areas and are able to handle complex assignments in businesses, academic institutions and in public administration. By combining computer-science related expert knowledge with a familiarity with research methodologies and business studies as well as communication skills, the degree program not only provides its graduates with a solid foundation for executive positions, but also with the formal entry requirements for doctoral programs and the higher grade of the civil service.

Degree

Students of the program graduate with the academic degree Master of Science (M.Sc.). The Master of Science is a high-value degree within the uniformly structured European system of higher education degrees.

Program Outcomes

  • The graduates of the program are expected to be able to
  • work confidently and in an analytical, scientifically well-founded and critical manner
  • confidently apply, refine and develop further methods and technologies in research and development
  • apply the acquired skills in the area of computer science and particularly in the pursued concentration successfully, independently and innovatively
