Since winter semester 2005/06, the faculty offers a degree program in computer science. Upon degree completion, students can solidify their acquired knowledge by enrolling in the master's program in computer science.
Attention: Beginning in winter semester 2010/11, the bachelor's degree program in computer science will be superseded by the bachelor's program in applied computer science.
The transition regulations for the bachelor's program in computer science governed by the examination regulations of 2007 to the bachelor's program in applied computer science in accordance with the examination regulations of 2010 can be downloaded as a pdf file in Stud.IP, under the institution (German: "Einrichtung") "Studiengang Allgemeine Informatik." The file "UebergangAI.pdf" also includes an equivalency list that specifies how completed courses in accordance with the 2007 examination regulations can be transferred to the new program governed by the 2010 examination regulations.
This diagram (in German only) provides an overview of the last course offerings of the program.
The computer science bachelor's program does not have limited admission. However, as the program is going to be terminated and replaced by the program in applied computer science, is the admission not possible anymore.
The computer science bachelor's program is a six-semester program of study. Courses are complemented by intensive tutorials and small group projects with close contact to instructors. Students have up-to-date Windows and Linux work stations at their disposal. In their fifth semester, the program's academic education is enriched by a practical project in an enterprise. In the sixth semester, students can follow their interests by placing individual emphases and actively participate in projects related to their bachelor's theses. The faculty's cooperation with German and international enterprises offer a variety of interesting opportunities for internships and the bachelor's thesis.
The methods of computer science require strong abstract thinking skills and the ability to consciously apply the laws of logic. In secondary schooling, these abilities are particularly being furthered in mathematics and natural science classes. Prospective students with an affinity for using formal reasoning abilities are particularly being encouraged to choose computer science as their field of study.
Career Options
Given the broad-ranging education offered by the program, graduates can as a rule enter into all of computer science's areas of application. There graduates take on demanding positions in business, in manufacturing or in the service sector. Openness towards new technologies as well as their understanding of complex technical and commercial assignments allows graduates to work in interdisciplinary teams and to develop holistic solutions in the IT area.
