Design That Takes Its Clues from the Market

The Wiesbaden bachelor's program foregrounds preparation for the professional practice. Project work and an ongoing dialog with professionals from the practice forms the core of our teaching.

Varying project topics are offered in cooperation with external partners that range from enterprises to cultural or economic institutions. Students complete the usually quite complex project assignments in teams and under realistic conditions, from an initial briefing to research, concept development and design up to the final presentation. Many of the developed designs need to take budget restraints and deadlines into account and be feasible under realistic conditions of production. The high number of realized project designs manifests our program's aspirations and evidences the excellent skills of our students.

Last But Not Least Student teams from RheinMain University of Applied Sciences have successfully competed even with established agencies and design studios.

Project Emphases

Five project emphases allow students to choose an area of specialization within the wide-ranging program offerings.

Corporate Design

The corporate design project emphasis focuses on communication projects that contribute to creating corporate identities with well-founded strategic concepts or that help maintain and develop an existing identity.

One of its essential elements is the area of corporate design. Assignments range from developing a company's visual identity to its self-presentation in print and audio-visual media as well as at trade shows or events.

By purposefully using linguistic and design tools, corporate design foregrounds the consistent, harmonious effect of the overall design. (Back to the menu.)

Editorial Communication

The projects offered under the heading of editorial communication focus on structuring and processing complex information. Examples are books, magazines and interactive learning tools as well as exhibitions with the relevant accompanying media. Apart from the concept, sequencing and design, working with text constitutes an especially important part of these projects. (Back to the menu.)

Advertising

The advertising project emphasis includes assignments from the area of product and brand communication. The advertising emphasis prioritizes purposefully influencing consumer behavior. In this context, classical advertising campaigns are increasingly losing ground to new forms of marketing communication.

The work of the project groups focuses for the most part on developing striking ideas. Marketing and writing copy also have special importance. (Back to the menu.)

Applied Art

What ties the projects of this emphasis together is that they always require applying an artistic design vocabulary in a communicative context, for example in books, brochures, calendars or exhibitions.

The expressive power of photographic, painting and graphic techniques is used to enhance informative, image-building or entertaining media and support their functions. In this context, conceptual and artistic quality have equal weight. (Back to the menu.)

Audiovisual Design

The audiovisual communication project emphasis is about designing for computer and television screens as well as for the big screen, for example screen design, design of interactive media, 3D computer animation, animated film, film and video. Interaction, moving images and sound assist in communicating highly variegated contents.

The latter range from informative and instructional media to advertising and entertainment.

Students acquire the requisite technical know-how while working on the projects. (Back to the menu.)
