Why has the WBS chosen this standardized test to help assess your English?

• It’s short, yet still very accurate.
• It’s automatically marked with instant results and gives an internationally recognized language ability level with every test result.
• Each question has been tested to make sure that it will actually help identify your level.
• The people involved in creating the test have many years’ experience in language testing.
• It tests your understanding of the meaning in language, as well as grammar and vocabulary.

What does it test?

The test is divided into two parts: Use of English and Listening.

How long will it take?

The test should take between 45 minutes and an hour (although you are given 65 minutes to complete it). However, it all depends on you. The test is adaptiv. This means that it doesn’t have a set number of questions, and the questions won’t always be the same. The test decides which questions to ask you, depending on how well you are doing. If you answer a question correctly, you will be given a more difficult one next; conversely, you will get an easier question next if you don’t answer the previous question correctly. By constantly matching questions from its databank to your ability to answer them correctly, the computer can, therefore, accurately assess your level of English.

What will it tell you?

Results will normally be posted on the door to the language centre the day after a test.

When you look at the results you will see a total score between 1 and 120, and individual scores for Use of English und Listening. This means that you’ll be able to see whether you might need to work harder on either grammar & vocabulary or on understanding the meaning in spoken English. You’ll also see a level of language competency (on the Common European Framework of Reference / CEFR scale) ranging from A1 (basic level) to C2 (upper advanced level). Below is a table showing how these levels correspond to your point score in the test:

What are the required minimum levels (OOPT point scores)?

Master's applicants should visit the webpages Master Programs: English Proficiency Requirements and Proof of English level for Master's applicants for details of the required point scores as well as information about test dates and registration.

Bachelor students must obtain a minimum CEFR level in order to register for the Business in English exams corresponding to OOPT point scores of at least

• 40 points (B1) for Business in English 1 in all bachelor study programs
• 40 points (B1) for Business in English 2 in all bachelor study programs
• 60 points (B2) for Business in English 3 in the study programs BBA / BBL / BIF - 2010 exam regulations
• 70 points (B2+) for Business in English 3 in all study programs - 2005 exam regulations
• 80 points (C1) for Business in English 3 in the study program BIBA - 2010 exam regulations

What happens if you don’t achieve the required score at the first attempt?

You can repeat the test once per semester free of charge. If you need to take the test more than twice in any semester, you will be charged a fee of €10 each time you retake the test. Master's applicants also have the chance to sit the test twice free of charge.

When are tests are offered?

Tests are normally offered every week during the semester until just before the end of exam registration (Klausuranmeldung). They are also offered after that over the remainder of the semester, but less frequently. Test dates / times are always announced in advance in the WBS Newsletter.

How do you register for a test?

Are other certificates accepted in place of the OOPT?

If you have passed a standardized English proficiency exam on the WBS-recognized list (e.g. TOEFL or Cambridge First Certificate / Advanced English) at B1, B2 or C1 level, you can use the certificate as proof of your English proficiency in place of the OOPT if the exam is not out of date (exams are generally valid for 2 years). Please contact the WBS' Head of Business English for more information.

Warum hat die WBS diesen standardisierten Test gewählt?

• Der Test ist kurz, aber sehr aussagekräftig, um Ihre Englisch-Kenntnisse einzuschätzen.
• Man erhält rasch ein Ergebnis inklusive Zuordnung zu einer international anerkannten Sprachstufe.
• Jede Frage wurde eingehend überprüft, fundiert zur Bestimmung der Sprachstufe beizutragen.
• Die Testentwickler haben langjährige Erfahrung mit Sprachtests.
• Neben Vokabular und Grammatik wird auch das Sprachverständnis getestet.

Was wird getestet?

Der Test besteht aus zwei Bereichen: Sprachanwendung und Hörverständnis.

Wie lange dauert der Test?

Sie haben 65 Minuten Zeit, doch in der Regel benötigen Sie nur 45 bis 60 Minuten. Es hängt ganz alleine von Ihnen ab, denn der Test ist adaptiv: Es gibt keinen feststehenden Satz immer gleich bleibender Fragen. Welche Fragen gestellt werden, entscheidet sich abhängig von Ihren Antworten. Wenn Sie eine Frage richtig beantworten, ist der Schwierigkeitsgrad der nächsten Frage höher, und umgekehrt einfacher, wenn die vorherige Antwort falsch war. Indem die Fragen fortlaufend Ihren Fähigkeiten angepasst werden, lässt sich Ihr individuelles Sprachniveau sehr genau einschätzen.

Was besagen die Testergebnisse?

Die Ergebnisse werden normalerweise am Folgetag an der Tür zum Sprachenzentrum ausgehängt.

Das Ergebnis zeigt sowohl eine Gesamtpunktzahl zwischen 1 und 120 als auch Einzelpunktzahlen für die beiden Teilbereiche Anwendung und Hörverständnis. Daraus können Sie ersehen, in welchem Bereich Ihre Schwachstellen liegen. Zudem werden Sie einer Sprachstufe entsprechend der Skala des Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmens (GER) zugeordnet. Was passiert, wenn Sie die Mindestpunktzahl nicht beim ersten Versuch erreichen?

Sie haben die Möglichkeit, den Test einmal pro Semester kostenfrei zu wiederholen. Wenn Sie den Test mehr als zweimal pro Semester absolvieren möchten, wird eine Gebühr von €10 bei jedem weiteren Test erhoben. Masterbewerber dürfen den Test ebenfalls zweimal kostenfrei ablegen.

Wann finden die Tests statt?

Testtermine werden bis zum Beginn der Klausuranmeldephase wöchentlich angeboten. Danach folgen weitere Termine bis zum Ende des Semesters, aber nicht mehr jede Woche. Testtermine werden immer im Voraus im Newsletter bekannt gegeben.

Kann anstatt des Tests ein gleichwertiges Zertifikat anerkannt werden?

Wenn Sie mit einer von der WBS anerkannten Englischprüfung (z.B. TOEFL oder Cambridge First Certificate / Advanced English) Kenntnisse nach GER-Stufe B1 / B2 resp. C1 nachweisen können und das Zertifikat nicht älter als 2 Jahre ist, nehmen Sie bitte Kontakt mit dem Head of Business English der WBS auf. Eine Teilnahme am OOPT ist dann nicht erforderlich.
